Tourism is a dynamic field which ever changing and adapting to meet evolving needs. Gone are the days where families used to plan one long annual vacation and stop. Today, frequent weekend trips to nearby places, ‘Staycations’ and one day trips are common. Another growing trend in tourism is air travel. The scope for Travel and Tourism industry to grow and evolve is tremendous and makes it a good career choice. But as it goes for every industry, having the appropriate educational qualifications, acquiring essential skills, getting experience and working hard are mandates for being able to build a good career in the field of Travel and Tourism, as well.
Here’s a small list of some qualities that are considered to be important to start a career in Travel and Tourism:
- Patience: This job involves meeting people with varying mind sets and attitudes. Dealing with them requires patience.
- Readiness to learn about different cultures: Knowledge about different cultures can help you to know more about your customers. It can help you understand the needs for your clients, better.
- Language: Knowing more than one language in any field is a big advantage. It is more so in Travel and Tourism. It will give you an edge above the others and your job application might be among the top applicants.
- Communication: Communication is the key! With good communication skills it will be easier to interact with customers and build a rapport with them.
- Problem-Solving: You should be an effective and a quick problem solver who always has a backup plan. You must always be able to help your client with any issues that they face. Be it a last-minute cancellation of a flight or a hotel room booking, you must be able to assist your client and do the best for them.
- Planning: The skill to plan and organize things seamlessly for your client will help you go a long way in the field.
- Active: Being alert, proactive and enthusiastic at work is important else you might miss out on clients.
